Tom at the premiere of Lions for Lambs

Last night Tom Cruise arrived at the primiere of his latest flick Lions For Lambs in Leicester. There Tom Cruise has walked the red carpet in Leicester Square at the premiere of his film. The star dedicated a whole two hours to chatting to his fans and even after signing tons of autographs, Tom's hand didn't cramp up.

When Tom eventually made his way round to MTV News where we asked him about playing the part of a Senator and whether he fancied going in to politics for real:

“No. Politics is a part of our lives that I pay attention to but I’m an artist first and foremost,” said the actor.

Tight security and a ban on live interviews helped ensure his red carpet stroll remained free of drama, unlike his new film about a post 9/11 world.

Lions For Lambs - new film of Tom

ALPHACROSS | 24 October, 2007 11:46

www.reuters.com_400  Tom Cruise, the hollywood megastar and Academy Award winner Robert Redford get serious in their new film "Lions For Lambs", the film based on a platoon of soldiers stationed in Afghanistan, a senator, a reporter, and a college professor and the Hollywood's latest take on U.S. foreign policy and the military fallout from the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The film brings together what at first seem three separate story lines, playing out simultaneously, to look at the sacrifice of U.S. soldiers, the relationship between politics and the media, and the need for young Americans to take a stand.  The first strand has an up-and-coming Republican senator, played by Cruise, trying to sell an "exclusive" over Washington's new strategy in the war in Afghanistan to a television journalist, interpreted by Meryl Streep.

With the only real action happening on the Afghan battlefield, the film's biggest challenge is its lengthy dialogues.

Orlando Bloom was caught up in war of words over woman prior to car crash

ALPHACROSS | 16 October, 2007 14:34

British actor Orlando Bloom was reportedly caught up in a verbal fight over a woman prior to crashing his car last Friday.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star, 30, was driving a black Toyota Matrix that belonged to his friend when he collided with a parked Porsche in Los Angeles.

The collision left the unnamed passenger with minor neck injuries.

Fashion photographer Damon Kidwell, 36, claimed that prior to the crash, he was about to physically attack Bloom after the latter attempted to flirt with the snapper's ex-girlfriend Veronica Taylor.

"I'm not going to say what he did but she told me, so I told him if he ever spoke to her again I would beat him up,” Contactmusic quoted Kidwell, as saying.

"He wasn't behaving like an English gent. Photographers surrounded us and that's what saved his bacon,” he said.

working with Tom Cruise

ALPHACROSS | 16 October, 2007 14:31

Hollywood hunk Tom Cruise is really difficult to work with, when it comes to photo-shoots. Top fashion photographer Steven Klein reportedly had a hard time handling the 'Mission Impossible' star, while shooting him for W magazine.

Klein, known to enhance the reputations of even established stars like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, was recently overheard grumbling about Cruise.

"Apparently, he was just annoying to work with," the New York Daily News quoted a source, as saying. "Steven said, 'When Madonna commits to something, she just does it.' But he didn't enjoy working with Tom," the source added.

Church honours supergran

ALPHACROSS | 15 October, 2007 18:20

ONE of Hampshire's very own supergrans is celebrating a decade of fundraising that has given hope to thousands of poor people across Sri Lanka.

The amazing fundraising efforts of Pene Gordon, pictured right, over the past ten years through her charity Ragalla Aid were honoured at a special lunch at her church, Waltham Chase Methodist Church. full.710534wpene

The 70-year-old from Curdridge began her campaign to help the desperate and poor in Sri Lanka after visiting the country where she spent her childhood.

Since then Ragalla Aid has snowballed, funding a day care centre for youngsters, helping to rebuild life after the tsunami and building schools and crèches.

Thanks to the work of this very special grandmother, young people have been given the chance to have full-time education, and the mentally and physically ill have been able to receive vital medical treatment.

Mrs Gordon said: "When I returned to Sri Lanka ten years ago I saw their desperate poverty and resolved to take action.

Australia starts off election campaigns

ALPHACROSS | 15 October, 2007 15:39

Canberra - Australia's Prime Minister John Howard and opposition leader Kevin Rudd have launched their campaigns for the upcoming parliamentary elections with media offensives. In a television interview, Mr Howard predicted a tough campaign, and underscored this by calling Mr Rudd's Labour party inexperienced and a danger to the economy. In turn, Mr Rudd called Mr Howard's government unimaginative. The prime minister admitted it would be difficult for his party to win. The latest opinion polls show Labour leading by 12 percent of the votes. On Sunday, Mr Howard announced that the elections would be held on 24 November. He said he had chosen a campaign period of six weeks, the longest period possible, to allow Australians to hear his message.

Already Howard announced a 24 November election saying the country "does not need new leadership, it does not need old leadership. It needs the right leadership. Howard is running for a fifth term in the 2007 election on Saturday 24 November, against the opposition Australian Labor Party led by Kevin Rudd.

Pope appeals to reject human cloning

ALPHACROSS | 12 October, 2007 13:53

Last month, South Korea decided to allow research on creating stem cells through human embryonic cloning to resume despite a scandal involving a prominent scientist in the field. Pope Benedict XVI appealed Thursday to South Koreans' "inherent moral sensibility" to reject embryonic stem cell research and human cloning after the country decided to let embryonic stem cell research resume. Benedict also praised South Korea's efforts to halt North Korea's nuclear ambitions in comments to Seoul's new ambassador to the Vatican, Ji-Young Francesco Kim, who presented his credentials to the pontiff.

Separately, the pope noted South Korea's "notable successes in scientific research and development." But he said such research must be carried out with "firm ethical standards" that always respect the dignity of human life. art.pope.afp.gi

Stem cells are master cells that can grow into any bodily tissues, which scientists say could lead to revolutionary new cures for hard-to-treat diseases. Benedict noted that the Vatican does not oppose -- and in fact encourages -- somatic stem cell research -- also known as "therapeutic cloning," which uses human eggs specifically for research from which stem cells are harvested.

GERMAN OFFICIAL APOLOGISES TO TOM CRUISE

ALPHACROSS | 11 October, 2007 17:33

Tom Cruise must be even smugger than usual today, sitting in his bunker safe in the knowledge that he has enough tinned Spam to last until the last of Xenu's warriors is defeated and knowing that the entire population of Germany has apologised for their recent shoddy treatment of the tiny thespian when shooting the film Valkyrie.

Oh, but as it turns out, this isn't quite the truth - just an anecdote put about by co-star Kenneth Branagh. Ken managed to stop luvvy-ing and praising everyone he's ever met for long enough to patronise Entertainmentwise,

"All that nonsense about the Germans not wanting Tom Cruise there was largely exaggerated. A week into our shooting the man that led much of the noise that had been made rang up deeply apologetic and said: 'I'm so sorry, I just read the script, it's fantastic. I did not understand. I'm sorry.'"

'Largely exaggerated'? One man ringing up? No retraction on the statement that Scientology was not a religion but a sinister money-making cult?

Looks like Tom is being damned by faint apologies, and for a nation as well-versed as Germany is at saying 'sorry' that's quite a slap in the schnitzel.

Telescope detects space dust

ALPHACROSS | 11 October, 2007 14:09

A telescope spots freshly made space dust in a quasar. Astronomers have taken a baby step in trying to answer the cosmic question of where we come from. Planets and much on them, including humans, come from dust -- mostly from dying stars. But where did the dust that helped form those early stars come from?

A NASA telescope may have spotted one of the answers. It's in the wind bursting out of super-massive black holes. The Spitzer Space Telescope identified large quantities of freshly made space dust in a quasar about 8 billion light years from here.

art.cosmic.dust Astronomers used the telescope to break down the wavelengths of light in the quasar to figure out what was in the space dust. They found signs of glass, sand, crystal, marble, rubies and sapphires, said Ciska Markwick-Kemper of the University of Manchester in England. She is the lead author of a study that will be published later this month in Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Microsoft unveils Zune media player

ALPHACROSS | 11 October, 2007 11:55

Microsoft has unveiled the second generation of its Zune media player, designed to compete with the dominant player in the digital music business, Apple’s iPod.   Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman, launched the first generation almost a year ago, which made little impact on iPod’s dominance, but Microsoft expects the new Zune to become the clear number-two to Apple by the end of this financial year.

bill_gates_718639 The new 4Gb and 8Gb models feature the Zune Pad, a touch-sensitive button for navigating on the device, and have a wireless feature that can sync the device with the owner’s home wireless network. Whereas these models employ Flash memory, there is also a new 80Gb hard drive model.

Microsoft said it had sold about 1.2m of its first-generation 30Gb Zune player. Apple has reportedly sold more than 100m Ipods in the six years they have been on the market.
